Mrs. Marcial's - Kindergarten Class

August 2009

Dear Parents,

Greetings! My name is Mrs. Nydia Marcial and I will be your child’s teacher this school year. This year promises to be full of new and exciting lessons to be learned. I know for many of you this will be your child’s first time in a classroom setting. This is a very special time in yours and your child’s life. Let me tell you a little bit about myself.

This is my twentieth year working in the field of education and my fourteenth year at Rainbow Christian. I have taught using the A Beka Curriculum for nineteen years. I am certified by Florida Association of Christian College and School. I was born in the Panama Canal Zone. I am married and have three children aging from 24 to 36 years old.

Your child’s spiritual education has top priority as each day begins with prayer and a Bible teaching. The goal of Bible is that every child know Jesus Christ as Savior. To help students know about Jesus we teach them Bible verses, songs, and stories. We will begin the year by studying the crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension of Christ and how to grow spiritually. We will study how sin began and what sin is through the stories of  Adam and Eve.

The A Beka Curriculum uses an intensive phonics approach in reading. Kindergarten children learn to read through the use of phonics. As soon as the short sounds of vowels and the sounds for only two consonants are introduced, they are able to sound out their first word. During the month of August and September, I will be teaching your child the names and sounds of A,B,E,H,I,L,M,O,T, and U. The students will be taught the concept of the five vowels and will sound/read blends and one-vowel words.

Proper reading habits will be established and practiced during reading circles starting in September. The  reading circles will be for five minutes. Later on, the circles will increase to eight minutes then to twelve minutes per each group.

Through mathematics students can see how things work together. 1 Corinthians 14:40- Let things be done decently and in order. This month, we will learn the concept of numbers 1-19, value of a penny, shapes: circle and triangle, concept of large, smaller, same size, after numbers and greater than.

Kindergarten students at Rainbow Christian learn to write in cursive using the A Beka Curriculum. First, students learn how to write lower-case letters of the alphabet. Then they learn how to join most the letters as they begin writing blends and words. Capital letters will be introduced later this year.  The first week of school the students will learn writing positions and writing vowels.

During Skills Development, students learn cutting skills, colors, sound identification, concept of same and telephone skills. Skills Development is taught to develop skills needed for a student’s physical, mental, social and personal growth.

Language Enrichment is used to help teach opposites and position words. We will also learn rhyming words, analogies, and recognition of incorrectly used words, drama and poetry. We will also be learning poems. The poems for August and September are, “The Turtle” and “The Elephant”.

We will also explore science, America, and children around the world.

Resources are special activities the students go to during the week. Resources include: Computer, Music, Physical Education, Library, and Conversational Spanish.

Each month I will be keeping you update with the new things your child will be learning. We will be very busy throughout the year and the children will have homework every night. This is very exciting for kindergarteners, so your encouragement and excitement at home are important.

I would also like to encourage you to have your children at school by 8:00 A.M. as class promptly begins at 8:15 A.M. Punctuality is a virtue that will follow your child throughout their lifetime. Please feel free to contact me any time you have a question or concern. You may call the office at (305) 258-0194 and leave a message. I will return  your call during break or immediately after school.

Parents, I want to be a blessing to you and your family this year. I am looking forward to having your child in my classroom.

I praise God for the gift of teaching. He has grace me with. Each child is precious not only in His eyes but also in mine.

 In the Lord’s service,

Mrs. Marcial
